Tennessee Onions

My Sister shared this recipe with me after serving for lunch one day.  We love onions and this is a great dish to take to a gathering, too.

Baked Onions

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp mustard powder
  • 1 tsp dried parsley
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 – 4 large Vidalia onions
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, grated
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°
  2. Grease or spray a 9 x 13 baking dish
  3. In large bowl, mix the thyme, parsley, garlic powder, oregano, salt, pepper, and mustard – set aside
  4. Peel and slice the onions into 1/4″ thick rounds.  Separate the slices into individual rings and transfer them to the bowl with the spices.  Toss until all slices are well coated then arrange them in the prepared baking dish.
  5. Cut the butter into thin slices or small cubes and layer evenly over the seasoned onions.
  6. Sprinkle the cheeses over the top of onions.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the onions are tender and the cheese is melted, bubbly and starting to brown on top. For extra crispy, broil for 2-3 minutes.

Notes

It’s ok if the onions overlap in the baking dish.  Also, best to use real butter, not margarine.  For the best cheese, use blocks and grate.
