Birds, Feeders, and Simple Joys: A Story from Home and the Shore

There’s something quietly magical about sharing your space with birds. Whether we’re at home or down by the beach, they’ve become part of our daily rhythm—color, movement, sound, and just enough unpredictability to keep things interesting.

At home, it all starts with the feeders. We didn’t just stop at one—we have multiple bird feeders set up, each drawing its own crowd. Over time, it’s turned into a kind of living ecosystem right outside our windows. Some birds are regulars, some just pass through, but all of them bring a little life to the yard.

One of our favorite upgrades has been the camera feeders. There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing birds up close—details you’d never notice otherwise. The way their feathers layer, how quickly they move, the personalities they seem to have. It turns birdwatching into something much more immersive.

It’s something we’ve enjoyed so much that we’ve even shared it with family. We’ve given camera feeders as gifts to our parents so they can experience the same joy of watching birds up close in their own backyard. My sister and brother-in-law have joined in too—they have a couple of feeders of their own, and she gets so excited every year when the first hummingbird of the season arrives. That sense of anticipation and connection to nature is contagious.

And then there are the hummingbirds we get to see up close. Their feeder is a whole experience on its own. They don’t just visit—they dart, hover, and zip around like tiny, iridescent rockets. You’ll miss them if you blink, but when you catch them just right, it feels like you’ve witnessed something special.

Check out our first hummingbird for the season – ❤️

Of course, identifying who’s who became part of the fun. That’s where the Merlin Bird ID app comes in. We’ll hear a call or song and immediately reach for our phones to figure out who’s nearby. It’s like having a translator for the soundtrack of our backyard. Suddenly, those random chirps become recognizable voices, and you start to feel like you really know your neighbors.

When it comes to feeding them, we keep it simple but effective. Black oil sunflower seeds are our ‘go-to’ they attract a wide variety of birds and never seem to disappoint. Recently, though, we added something new: chicken scratch. It turns out the smaller birds absolutely love it, and it’s brought in even more variety. It’s somewhat cheaper so as long as they eat it, that works for us. There’s always something new to watch.

And then… there’s the squirrel. He’s become part of the family in his own way, visiting us both at home and at the beach. We started putting out peanuts, and now he shows up like clockwork. Sometimes he comes right up to the window of my office. I say it’s “Nanny” since she used to fed squirrels out of her hand before passing. Other times he heads straight for the little feeder my husband set up just for him. He’s bold, a little mischievous, and completely entertaining.

Down at the beach, the cast of characters changes, but the enjoyment doesn’t. Seagulls get a bad reputation, but we’ve grown to love them. There’s something about their presence—their confidence, their calls, the way they ride the wind—that feels like an essential part of being near the ocean. And the laughing gull? That sound gets me every single time. He throws his head back at the last part of his ‘call’. It’s exactly what it sounds like—a kind of wild, echoing laugh carried on the breeze. You can’t hear it and not smile.

There’s one bird that rises above the rest for us—the blue heron. If beauty and grace had a mascot, this would be it.

There’s something almost surreal about the way a blue heron moves. Slow, deliberate, and completely unbothered by the world around it. Whether it’s standing perfectly still at the water’s edge or gliding overhead with those wide, steady wings, it feels more like watching a painting come to life than a bird just going about its day.

We’ve even been lucky enough to get up close to one that doesn’t seem to mind our presence. Those moments feel rare and special—like you’ve been allowed into its world, just for a minute. You notice everything: the detail in its feathers, the intensity in its eyes, the quiet confidence it carries.

It’s hard to put into words just how striking it is. “Beautiful” doesn’t quite cover it. There’s a calm elegance to the blue heron that sticks with you long after it’s gone.

Here’s a post about my husband’s encounter with a Red Tailed Hawk – definitely on his bucket list and so awesome…

In the end, it’s not just about watching birds. It’s about slowing down enough to notice them. It’s about learning their habits, recognizing their sounds, and sharing your space with a little piece of the natural world. Whether we’re at home or by the water, they’ve become part of what makes those places feel like ours.

Thanks for stopping by – until next time, may your days be grace filled, your kitchen warm and your heart rooted right where you are. 🩶
