Make It or Buy It?
Why We Almost Always Choose to Make It
There was a moment recently — standing in the produce section — when a simple recipe ingredient turned into a memory flood.
The recipe called for strawberry jam. Normally, most people would toss a jar into the cart and move on. Easy. Done. But then we noticed the strawberries. Plant City, Florida.
And instantly, I was transported back years and years ago. Daytona. Disney trips. Florida sunshine. And those roadside flea markets near Daytona Beach… maybe DeLand? Somewhere in that stretch of old vacation memories where time felt slower and strawberries somehow tasted sweeter.
We used to buy flats of those strawberries.
Not a basket.
Not a container.
A flat.
The kind of purchase that says:
“We’re about to make something.”
So when we saw strawberries from Florida instead of California, we grabbed three… maybe four packs.
And suddenly, that little recipe ingredient became a decision: Do we buy jam… or do we make it?
You already know the answer.
The Way We Tend to Think
Making instead of buying isn’t always about saving money. Honestly, sometimes it costs more. Sometimes it takes longer. Sometimes you end up with sticky countertops and dishes everywhere.
But there’s something deeply satisfying about creating food yourself. Especially when food carries memory. Especially when it slows you down. Especially when it reminds you of people, places, and seasons of life. That’s how we tend to approach cooking around here.
If we need:
- Bacon jam
- Tartar sauce
- Fajita seasoning
- Salad dressing
- Marinades
- Pickles
- Bread crumbs
…our first instinct is usually: Hmmmm…..I bet we can make that!
Not because we’re trying to be fancy. Not because we think homemade is always better. But because making things connects us to the process. And honestly? It’s fun.
So I did it! And it was awesome. Just enough for my recipe and an extra small jar. You can find the recipe here or scroll down. 🍓
Interactive Question #1
What’s something you stopped buying once you realized you could make it yourself?
(And was it actually better homemade?)
The Strawberry Jam Experiment
So yes… I made the jam. And it turned out better than I expected. Not “Pinterest perfect.” Not professionally canned. Just real homemade strawberry jam that tasted like Florida memories and summer mornings. The kind you keep sneaking spoonfuls of from the fridge. And the funny thing is: The jam became more meaningful than the recipe that originally required it.
Isn’t that how life works sometimes? You start making one small thing… and suddenly you’re creating an experience.

Interactive Question #2
Team Homemade or Team Store-Bought?
Pick one:
- Homemade every time
- Store-bought for convenience
- Depends on the item
- I want to make more things but never know where to start
Why Making Things Matters
I think there’s something bigger happening when we choose to make things ourselves.
It’s not really about jam.
It’s about participation.
Modern life encourages convenience at every turn:
- Faster
- Easier
- Delivered
- Pre-made
- Instant
And sometimes convenience is absolutely the right choice.
But making something — even something simple — reminds us we’re capable creators, not just consumers.
There’s pride in it.
There’s memory in it.
There’s ownership in it.
And sometimes there’s even a little magic in it.
A Few Things We’ll Probably Never Buy Again
Here are some homemade staples we keep going back to:
| Homemade Item | Why We Make It |
|---|---|
| Bacon Jam | Store versions never taste as good |
| Tartar Sauce | Fresher and customizable |
| Fajita Seasoning | No fillers or anti-caking stuff |
| Salad Dressings | Surprisingly easy |
| Taco Sauce | Better flavor control |
| Marinades | Usually already have ingredients |
| Jam | Because strawberries from Florida exist |
Interactive Question #3
What food instantly brings back memories for you?
Not fancy food.
Not restaurant food.
I mean the deeply personal kind.
The food that takes you somewhere.
Final Thought
Maybe the question isn’t: Is it cheaper to make it?
Maybe the better question is: Is this worth experiencing?
Because sometimes homemade food isn’t just food. Sometimes it’s memory preservation. Sometimes it’s storytelling. Sometimes it’s slowing down long enough to feel connected again. And sometimes… It starts with strawberries from Plant City, Florida.
