Shenandoah Music Festival: A Relaxing Summer Tradition in the Virginia Mountains -

For the past three years, one of our favorite summer traditions has been making the trip to the Shenandoah Music Festival in Orkney Springs, Virginia. If you enjoy classic rock, country harmonies, beautiful mountain scenery, and laid-back weekends, this hidden gem deserves a spot on your calendar.

We originally discovered the festival while looking for a smaller concert venue where we could enjoy music without the hassle of massive crowds, endless parking lots, or overpriced concessions. What we found was one of the most charming music experiences in the Shenandoah Valley. And even better, it’s only about an hour and a half away!

A Venue With No Bad Seats

One of the best things about the Shenandoah Music Festival is the venue itself. It’s small, intimate, and incredibly relaxed. Whether you sit close to the stage or farther back, there truly isn’t a bad seat in the place.

Over the years we’ve seen legendary groups like America, Pure Prairie League, Shenandoah, and Orleans perform there. These classic bands fit perfectly with the atmosphere — familiar songs, appreciative crowds, and a setting that feels more like a community gathering than a large commercial concert.

For groups or families, the lawn seating is especially fun. Many people spread out blankets and chairs, making the evening feel like a giant backyard concert in the mountains.

A Small-Town Experience

Orkney Springs itself is tiny — and during festival weekends, the whole town seems to revolve around the concerts. It’s part of what makes the experience so unique.

Parking is handled outside the venue area, and one of the most memorable touches is the hay wagon ride that takes concertgoers from the parking area to the stage. It adds to the old-fashioned mountain-town charm that you just don’t find at larger venues.

The atmosphere is relaxed from the moment you arrive.

Food, Ice Cream, and Homemade Pie

Unlike many venues where concessions feel overpriced and impersonal, the Shenandoah Music Festival keeps things community-focused.

Food is simple but satisfying — typically sandwiches, chips, and drinks — with proceeds supporting the facility itself. Local groups also serve ice cream and homemade pie, which has become part of the tradition for many returning visitors and all for a simple donation. Wow.

It feels less like buying concessions and more like supporting a community event.

Our Favorite Way to Do the Festival

After a few years of attending, we’ve settled into a routine that makes for the perfect weekend getaway.

We usually arrive mid afternoon the day of the concert, check in and then head to the concert about an hour before the show. That extra time lets us relax, enjoy the scenery, and avoid rushing. After the concert, we’re typically back at our Airbnb by around 10:00 to 10:30 p.m., which makes the entire experience feel easy and stress-free.

Although there are campgrounds nearby, we’ve always chosen to stay in Airbnbs located in the nearby ski resort area. The mountain setting is peaceful, and we’ve learned to look for a few must-haves when booking:

Pet-friendly accommodations for Bella
A grill for cooking our own meals
Enough space to relax between concerts

We usually bring most of our own food for the weekend because stores are pretty sparse around there. We plan our meals, pack our coolers and are all set. This in itself, makes the trip both affordable and convenient.

Make It a Full Weekend

If you can, the best way to experience the festival is by attending both the Friday and Saturday concerts. It turns a single concert night into a full mountain getaway.

There’s something special about waking up in the Shenandoah Mountains, grilling dinner at the Airbnb, and heading back for another evening of live music under the stars.

By the end of the weekend, you feel refreshed instead of exhausted.
